3D Scanning a Part

Successful on-site 3D scanning requires a blend of compliance with site-specific regulations and operations, technical adaptability, and robust client collaboration. These components collectively guarantee that the scanning procedure is efficient, considerate of the environment and produces data that is valuable and meets the requirements.

Part Review

We begin by understanding what the data will be used for as this will influence the next stages and ensure any scanning done is comprehensive yet cost-effective. We also review the part's size, material and complexity.

Setting Up

Whether we're in our scanning studio or out in the field, we create a plan to scan everything we need. Then, we place scanning markers or reference objects randomly to help the 3D scanner work accurately in 3D space.

3D Scanning

After ensuring our 3D scanner is freshly calibrated we begin the scan. As if digitally spray painting the part, we make sure we scan every area that needs data collecting. This is then fed to our computer as a point cloud so we can work on it in the next step.

Post Processing

Once all necessary geometry is captured, the point cloud data is converted into a mesh and refined to remove scanning artefacts and extraneous elements. From here, we either deliver the refined mesh data as an .STL or advance to the reverse engineering phase.

Using a 3D scanner captures information at such a rapid pace it is hard to imagine ever creating this information by hand. Using our scanner, we’re able to capture the compound-curving surfaces of the 19″ alloys and tyres in extreme detail.

This was all done without the need for sprays or special tricks to capture the glossy surfaces or black, energy-absorbing rubber.
